Homeground Coffee Roasters: Good Coffee Along the East Coast

When it comes to coffee and brunch, there are no shortage of options along the East Coast, particularly in the beautiful neighbourhood of Katong— with many all-time favourites like Penny University, and newer, shinier second outlets of established players like Forty Hands.

Meet Homeground Coffee Roasters, dedicated to sourcing good coffee beans from around the world and doubles as a retail space for beans and equipment.

Since it’s inception, Homeground Coffee has undergone quite a makeover.

Located in a shophouse, the shop opening is narrow and tables are limited, which means there are often queues on a weekend during peak brunching hours.

The cosy, intimate feeling you get definitely lends itself to a space better for couples and solo diners, rather than big groups looking to brunch.

Once inside though, tables don’t feel cramped at all, which is a lovely thing— made as such because of the current social distancing requirements, but all the better for it.

Homeground Coffee doesn’t just do coffee, with several dishes on the menu if you’d like to brunch.

You’ll find cookies and cakes, truffle fries, wings with sriracha mayo, granola yoghurt and more for light bites; pancakes, a big breakfast plate, avocado toast, wagyu beef burger etc. for heavier plates if you’re feeling a little more famished.

The coffee here is the star of the show of course, and we ordered an Iced White (where you’ll get to choose the beans you’d like) and an Iced Mocha.

The Iced White was easy to drink and light on the palette whilst not being too acidic. Because they have different beans you can choose from, you get to choose the taste you’d like according to your preference.

As for the Iced Mocha, perhaps it was the chocolate they used— with a heavier cocoa content, but it wasn’t as sweet as other mochas I’ve had. As such, the bitter taste of the chocolate was strong.

Personally, I felt the chocolate overpowered the taste of the coffee a little bit, but it was still enjoyable. And for those who don’t have much of a sweet tooth, I imagine this will be rather pleasing.

If you’d like to take their coffee back home, they do have their cold brew, mocha and chocolate concentrate available for purchase.

Overall, Homeground Coffee is a lovely and homely space, they do great coffee and have a decent selection of food to choose from, and coupled with being in the stunning area of Katong, you have another fantastic cafe to choose from in the neighbourhood.
