I feel like we typically tend to have a tendency of disowning our past, or at the very least, being embarrassed by our different phases at our growing stages of life. I think about this a lot, especially when musicians say, “my old work was not me, this is the real me,” and repeat ad nauseam for the next album cycle, and the next, and the one after etc.

But the truth is, every version of ourselves in the past, whether it was cool or embarrassing at the time, literally does not matter. Trends come and go, we fit ourselves into the moulds of those trends of the time, present ourselves a certain way, and change again when culture moves.

And that’s normal. That’s natural, actually. If anything, I think every version we present ourselves of is simply another building block. Life’s far too short to feel bad about ourselves— and remember that every version of yourself has gotten you here.
