Brawn & Brains Coffee: Easygoing Brunch Spot on Guillemard Road

Housed in the unassuming Former Singapore Badminton Hall, Brawn & Brains Coffee is a decent place for brunch along Guillemard Road, sandwiched between the Aljunied and Mountbatten MRT stations.

What started as a joint for freshly roasted coffee, pastries and sandwiches, Brawn & Brains has expanded into a bigger brunch menu with more filling options.

The clean, simple furnishing is made special by the asymmetrical ceiling.

The pop of yellow thanks to the high chairs match the La Marzocco espresso machine, adding a bit of colour to the proceedings.

They recently opened a second outlet at East Coast just last year, joining the flurry of coffeehouses in the Katong and Joo Chiat area.

The Guillemard Road outlet though, remains the original, and is still popular as we had to wait about 15 minutes for a table to be available on a Sunday, with the cafe remaining full even till about mid-afternoon.

It seems prices have slowly crept up since their inception, as the Oven Baked Molten Eggs with a side of Smoked Salmon, Avocado and Molten Cheese came up to a hefty (in comparison to their old prices, anyway) $17.90.

I loved it though— the mix of bright colours made the dish as tantalising to look at as it was delicious. My only gripe would be that the underside of the oven baked eggs had a rather thick crust, and would’ve preferred if the crust was slightly thinner.

We also had the Open Face Toast ($16.90) with a slow cooked egg, and topped with a generous amount of grilled bacon, which was another well-balanced plate that looked and tasted good.

Other food options focus mostly on toast and sandwiches, though they do have a Hearty Grain Bowl ($16.80) as well as BB Waffles & Ice Cream ($12) for those craving something sweet instead.

Drinks wise, they have a selection of coffee, organic tea (with decaffeinated options), juices and beer.

Brawn & Brains Coffee has been around for a while now, and it’s easy to see why this place still brings in the crowds after all this time, with classic brunch plates in a cosy and well-lit space.
