The Bravery: Aesthetic Halal Brunch Cafe Reopens at Telok Ayer

The Bravery is not new to the cafe scene in Singapore, and have, in fact, been around since 2013. However, with the expiration of their previous lease in Jalan Besar, they have just reopened in a shophouse closer downtown at Amoy Street, an area with heavy competition.

The narrow shophouse space features cream walls, pastels and wooden furniture— a colour palette that aims to please.

The Bravery is Muslim-owned as well, which means this is definitely one to add to the halal cafe list.

We headed over on a weekday brunch and it was surprisingly not too crowded.

Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, The Bravery has a decently sized menu.

I opted for The Frenchie (S$18), with caramelised brioche toast complete with mixed berries and vanilla bean ice cream. The brioche was done quite wonderfully, and the sweetness of the ice cream and toast balanced quite nicely with the berries which were slightly sour. My only gripe was that I personally would have preferred the caramel layer to be less burnt as some bits tasted a little too charred for my liking. It also would not have hurt to be a little more generous with their portion of ice cream, which currently looks like a drop rather than a proper scoop.

For their famous Pancake Stack (S$14), the three-stacked pancakes were wonderfully thick and fluffy. Served with a berry compote, mixed berries, cream cheese and maple syrup, we do wish they would have been slightly more generous with the toppings as well, as there was a lot more pancake than accompaniments.

Unlike other fluffy pancakes elsewhere with more air than actual pancake mix though, The Bravery’s is filling which is great. The flavours all balanced out nicely, but unfortunately the pancake was a little on the drier side of things.

The Bravery is known for their Lavender Latte (S$6 / S$6.50 with an additional S$1 to have it iced), so I knew I had to give it a try. The coffee was both smooth and creamy, and made for an easy afternoon pick-me-up. The notes of lavender do come through quite nicely as well, and I suspect coffee lovers who are a fan of floral teas might enjoy this one.

The Bravery is well-known for their bakes as well, so do try them out should you be a fan of baked goods.

With an aesthetically pleasing interior, a well sized menu of different meal servings, I’d say The Bravery is on to a winning combination here.
