Miznon: Israeli Street Food Now at Bustling Telok Ayer

In a city as cosmopolitan as Singapore, it’s not surprising to see many cuisines from around the world represented in all sorts of dining concepts— from humble hawker stores to casual cafes to upmarket fine fining restaurants.

Telok Ayer is chockfull of dining options, from boisterous Korean barbecue joints to quiet coffee spots.

Joining the fray is Miznon, a restaurant specialising in Israeli street food with a lovely atmosphere to boot; transporting you somewhere in the Mediterranean with suitably appropriate music playing over the speakers and an open kitchen concept.

Founded by celebrity chef Eyal Shani, who you might recognise from Masterchef Israel, the Miznon chain can be found in many cities around the world, including Melbourne, Paris and New York.

With a focus on pita bread, you’ll find delicious flavours packed in each of their pita pockets.

We had the White Pita (S$16), Minute Steak (S$19) and Falafel Burger (S$13) pitas.

Unfortunately the world famous Baby Cauliflower Flower (S$16) had sold out, so we were unable to sink our teeth into their renowned dish. As such, we had the next best option which was the White Pita, which comes with cauliflower, tahini, tomato salsa, chilli and spring onion.

The pita here is truly great, and is made from a secret recipe, frozen and then flown in directly from Israel.

What’s lovely is that even when the pita cools down after you’ve had a few bites, it remains soft yet chewy, and delicious down to the last bite.

I’ve had pita pockets in other places before, and usually when the bread has cooled halfway through your meal, it no longer retains that wonderfully soft texture on the inside whilst maintaining a beautiful crunch on the outside.

Here at Miznon, it’s soft all the way through, so top marks for that.

The sauces and other ingredients come together beautifully, and they certainly don’t skimp on the filling; as the meat in my Minute Steak pita was almost falling out of the pita with every bite.

Miznon (which translates to ‘canteen’ in Hebrew) serves up simple and classic fare, and is not fussed in the best way.
