Pantler: Popular Pâtisserie Reopens at River Valley

A previous mainstay of Telok Ayer, the much raved about Pantler moved out of their narrow shophouse space and into a brand new, bigger, and brighter place at River Valley earlier this year.

The island counter occupies much of the shop floor near the door, but you’ll find two sections to dine-in behind the counter, including a courtyard looking corner at the back flushed in daylight pouring in from overhead, whilst the other corner on the left is a lot more intimate and cosy.

I’ve always enjoyed the cakes at Pantler, if only because they tend to be lighter on the palette, perfect for a sweet treat after a meal.

We had the Opera (S$9.50), complete with a moist almond sponge, coated with espresso and filled with smooth chocolate ganache. The espresso flavours balance the sweetness perfectly, resulting in a beautiful mix of flavours that aren’t too overwhelming. The macaron is also done pretty well, the outside delightfully crisp whilst chewy on the inside.

Opting for a more fruity cake to go with our chocolatey offering above, we went for the Figaro (S$9.50), which is said to be their take on a strawberry tiramisu. If there is any alcohol though, I couldn’t quite taste it here. The combination of strawberries, raspberries, mascarpone and marsala seems pretty nice on paper, but I felt the cheesiness of the mascarpone was a tad too strong for my liking. Cheesecake lovers will definitely love this one.

As for their other baked items, you’ll find things like Financiers (S$3.50), Pound Cake Slices (S$3.50), Brownies (S$3.50) and Mini-Doughnuts (S$3.50).

Their doughnuts come in several flavours, namely earl grey, cinnamon, matcha and vanilla. The matcha doughnut was so-so, as it was unfortunately a little dry, and was definitely left on the counter for more than a day.

It’s not hard to see why Pantler has always been popular, and while finding seats to dine-in might have been an issue at their previous outlet even on weekdays, this new space should hopefully then allow for more diners.

I for one, am glad Pantler is back.
